camping

This is one of the earliest camping photos I can find. It's of my sister and I. We have matching Lego haircuts...but that's a whole other post.

I loved going camping. It was so much fun. I can remember asking if it was time to go to sleep because sleeping in a zipped up bag with a green glow stick was very cool for a kid.

You could wear your daggy clothes (or in my case clothes that had shrunk 3 sizes in the wash) and get dirty and it was ok.

You had bbq's for breakfast, lunch and dinner and you could toast things on a stick.

This weekend we went and looked at tents and sleeping bags because we want our children to have these memories.

We saw a lovely big canvas tent that we will buy when the money fairy visits again, because Ben said the canvas will last us 40 years and big because Ben took me camping once in a 2 man tent and I spent the night clawing at the tent walls. I felt like a sardine.

If I am going camping, I need to stand in the tent. I like the outdoors, but I still need maintenance. I am not a bush woman who walks around with a shovel when they need to go to the toilet. I'm more a city bush woman who needs a power point to plug in the hair straightener.

Ben's a bushman. He is a country boy and when I first went to his house (in the bush) I wore heels. He laughed. Ben also showed me how to toast marshmallows on a rake (you can do about 8 at once), he also baked pasties using a box and a stick, and cooked our whole meal in the ground. He was like the Marlboro Man, only without the hat and the smokes and the horse.....so really nothing like the Marlboro Man. He did wear jeans though.

Do you like camping or is your idea of camping no complimentary hairdryer at the hotel? Do you have any handy hints?

i really must try and blog more.....

and thank goodness for Jamie! Jamie had a 8 is great questionnaire on her wonderful blog and I thought I need to do this to post something on my poor neglected space. Thank you Jamie! Please play along and send me your link.

1. What is your favorite day of the year?
Christmas Eve because it's homely. The baking is almost done, Ben's eaten half the ham, we are drinking egg nog, and the carols are on. I love carols.
2. If you could have dinner with 3 people, who would they be?
Audrey, Bill and Johnny. We'd make risotto and lemon cake for dessert. I would also wear a red beanie.

3. What's your favorite song right now?
The kids and I can't stop playing Artie's Safety Dance.

4. Name the last 5 things you purchased.
The last purchase was this wonderful vintage dress I found on Etsy.
Although my other things are not purchased, they sure felt like it. I had a bag of clothes given to me from my beautiful friend Candy.
Because I am losing weight, Candy gave me dresses and jeans and told me to wear them while I am in between sizes. She said that there was no point in buying anything new because I will only waste money buying more clothes again because I will be smaller.
Only a friend would think of that. She's wonderful.....and has fantastic taste.

5. What do you order at McDonalds?
I have a large chai latte while the kids have happy meals, every Thursday for Elton and Audrey's treat day. Thursday is a really long day and we have our fun lunch in the middle.
6. Are you a hugger?
Oh yes. I love hugs. There are so many different kinds and they are all good.
7. Would you rather get a shot from a doctor or a filling from a dentist?
The Doctor. I am scared of the Dentist.
8. What is your favorite type of exercise?

Right?

tiny dancer

video

Audrey goes to Twinkles dancing. It's for 3 and 4 year old tots and she absolutely loves it.

Audrey had a little end of term show for us to see and we thought she was adorable.

Aud is the smallest girl in the class in the pink fairy dress and hair buns.

quiet

It's been a little quiet this week. We are winding down to the school holidays and are looking forward to the break for some home time and relaxing.

Tomorrow Ben and I have our monthly date night but to get us there here is a great song called Coca Cola by a band from Melbourne called Little Red. Ben showed me this song last night and said "I can see you dancing in this video." He always gets it right.

This song can put anyone in a good mood.

Happy Friday!

friends

image here
This past weekend I went on a girls night out. The first girls night out in about 10 years. Probably longer.

I went out for dinner with four other girls and it was such a nice night. We talked and laughed and it was so great to be in the company of friends.

delicious miss dahl

I have spoken before about my love for good cooks - Jamie, Nigella and my friend Jules.....

Now there is another one, Sophie Dahl.

I always loved her. She was one of the first plus size fashion models when I was growing up and recent searching on the net lead me to her cookbook and a cooking show called The Delicious Miss Dahl that you can see on YouTube.

Some people are just so talented. She fell out of the beauty tree and now she can cook! heck.
Buy her book here

And you will have to watch the show a fair few times. First time for the recipe and the second time to drool over her beautiful kitchen, then for her outfits........what a lucky duck!

vintage frocks

Where have I been?

Well I have been baking for my crew, running about in the car, going to birthday parties, food shopping, watching movies, falling asleep on the couch (alot lately), shedding some cushioning and watching lots of Glee and Masterchef.

It is freezing cold and all I ever feel like is eating soup. Do you really eat soup? Not really any chewing involved......

Ben calls me soupy. So we have also been eating lots of soup to warm us up. I think we have tried every soup recipe and we are always on the lookout for a new one to try.

I have also been spending my nights searching for lovely old dresses. I love that you can find some for next to nothing and in wonderful condition. When we go back to Perth for Christmas, I think my Mum will get a kick out of seeing some of my dresses because I have seen photos of Mum in the same styles in her yesteryears, as some of the dresses I have found.

I love that they had the tent dress - one size fits all. You can pull it all in with a belt.

I love that they had big oversized pockets on dresses.

I love that they had elasticized waists - perfect for fitting in a meal.

I love that dresses came in every colour.

I love that dresses felt like there was only one made - one just for you.

Like this one from I Could Be Good For You

or this one from Little Veggie Vintage

or this cute scooter dress from Vintage Sensibilities

or a yellow dress from Dalena Vintage
or this one (and the first yellow dress) from Iron Orchid Vintage
I will take one of each please.

today

Nearly every night I hope to fall asleep first. But it's not always the case.

I read my book and I hear the steady breathing coming from Ben and I know he has fallen asleep.

Audrey and Elton have been asleep in their beds for hours, so it's just me now. Awake with my thoughts.

I don't know if it's because it's dark and you can't see and everything feels magnified, but I worry at night.

I worry about the news I have watched that day and what if it had happened to my family. I worry about Elton's future. I worry about when Ben has that early start and drives to work, I hope he won't have an accident. Is Audrey's smoke alarm working and can her night light catch on fire? What is someone breaks in? Will I be able to wake up in time to save everybody?

I think of my life when I was single and alone. When I didn't have anybody to love, so I had nothing to lose.

Now I have so much to lose my beautiful family with so much love, that is spills out and runs down the driveway.

So I repeat those wise words spoken by Oogway from Kung Fu Panda that I have watched 3 billion times with two of my best pals - Yesterday is history, Tomorrow a mystery, Today is a gift, that's why it is called a present.

I push my hair away from my damp face, roll over and close my eyes and I hope tomorrow is just the same as today.

hello

Oh Winter. You had me at hello.
