quilt-a-long week 1 - collect your things...

image here

ok....ready to start your beginners quilt? Let's go!

Week one for the quilt-a-long is a little about quilts, inspiration and buying your things.

Quilting is so much fun. I have been quilting for about 6 months and I really enjoy it. I love that a quilt can look like anything you want. You can patch all your scraps together and have a mismatch of colours. You can have your edges fraying and have an inside out quilt. You can do different shapes - from long strips of fabric, circles or large squares. There are no rules.

The more quilts you make, your own style will start to emerge.

You should not be hard on yourself and if you are a perfectionist, go easy on yourself. When you attempt something handmade it should look just that - handmade. It's the quirks, the whimsy and the little differences that make us love something made just for us.

This is a beginners lap quilt and the quilt is going to have no measurements. For your first quilt you don't want to be worrying about getting everything just right. If you stress about cutting your material down to the last inch or centimeter and it doesn't go to plan, you won't want to try quilting again.

The squares for the top of our quilt are large (we will cut next week). It is easier to learn if you start on something not so tricky and you will have oodles of confidence to try new quilts if your first one is easy to do. You are more likely to give up if your first quilt it too hard.

Over the next week you will need to gather up the following -

*5 fat quarters in different contrasting patters (fat quarters are pre-cut pieces of material that are folded into a square shape)
*1 single bed sheet
*Batting. I always buy more than I need because I can use the leftovers. For this quilt I would buy the single bed size. It will be more than enough.
*yarn and sewing needle (the eye should be big enough for the yarn to be threaded through)
*masking tape
*pins
*safety pins
*pair of scissors or rotary trimmer

This is also a challenge. Do you think you could buy the material from a thrift store or markets etc for $2? Even part of it?

Dani from The Power of Two has a blog that makes you think about $2. Doesn't seem much. $2...but when you start to think about how $2 could make a difference to someone, you realise that $2 can mean the world.

I found my 5 fat quarters at a bargain store called Dimmeys here in Melbourne, $1.70 for 5. My single bed sheet was from Savers and it costs exactly $2. With my batting, pins, etc I would be over the limit...

Can I make a quilt for $2 - yes and no.

If I was to make the quilt outright, buying the material from the shop. No.

If I made the quilt from recycled material I have at home, used calico for batting. Yes

If I made one large square and my friends each made a square and we pieced it together and donated the quilt. Yes.

Search your home. Some of the material you need could be right under your nose. An old tablecloth, a skirt that no longer fits, old baby blankets or cot sheets, can all be turned into something else.

For the hand sewers, you could make a patch pillowcase out of felt (if you are new to sewing). Felt is great for beginners and it is very easy to sew by hand.

If you have a pillow at home you would like to cover, buy a piece of backing material a little bigger then the size of your pillow (allow for seems etc) and different pieces of felt that go well together for your front.

If you would like to make the quilt, it is not impossible. Just take your time and you will finish it.

This quilt made by Alicia from Posie Gets Cosy (above) is how we are going to quilt our quilt. This is what the yarn and sewing needle is for.

So to wrap up you need to pick which project you want to do - the quilt or the patchwork pillow, buy your things and wash and iron your material.
See you next Monday for the cutting. :)

new blog to love

My beautiful friend Jules has started a food blog called Battlestar Mess Hall.

It will feature Jules' yummy cooking, recipes, photos and restaurant reviews.

If you are like me and are always searching for food inspiration, follow Jules. I have eaten her food and it's delicious!

1 year anniversary

One year ago yesterday (Sunday 28th June) we said goodbye to Perth, Western Australia and arrived in our new home state, Melbourne Victoria.

We took a drive to Healesville and went for a walk around the little town. I took some photos of the town. It is so pretty and the drive to Healesville from our house is lovely. Winding, through beautiful trees and narrow roads. It's in our shire, 30 minutes away.

Ben and I talked about living in Melbourne and one year on and we are still excited to be here. It feels like home.

ben

Love him or hate him, Michael Jackson had some great songs.

Without this song, my husband wouldn't have his name.

Thank you Michael Jackson for singing this song and giving two young lovers (Mummsey and Pa) a name to call their son.

RIP

the little things that matter.....

image via here

I sometimes feel like Bill Murray from Groundhog Day. Going about my daily routine, doing some of the same things each day, day after day.
You try to vary your day and mix it up a bit, but it's basically the same.
I was looking out the window (I do my best thinking looking out the window) and was thinking that it's just the way that you look at your Groundhog Day that makes the difference.
I sat down and wrote a list about how you can find happiness in the simple things....and just about all of these things come from my Groundhog Day.
The Little Things That Matter.......

1. Finding things the kids have thought they lost.
2. Kisses (including the animals)
3. Receiving lovely comments on my blog.
4. Making someone laugh.
5. When I hear a favourite song.
6. Morning coffee.
7. Bear hugs.
8. Saying the same thing as Ben at the same time.
9. Finding a car spot when it’s busy.
10. Waking up in the night and I still have time to sleep.
11. A nice clean house and my chores done at the end of everyday.
12. Towels straight from the dryer to wrap Elton and Audrey in.
13. The smell of being home.
14. When I have an idea.
15. Clean sheets.
16. Sitting on the deck outside with nowhere to go and nothing to do - just sitting.
17. Sharing memories.
18. A compliment.
19. The kids making me laugh.
20. Tickling Elton and Audrey.
21. Seeing someone’s face when they are happy.
22. Feeling warm when it’s cold outside.
23. When it’s raining and you know you won't get wet.
24. Holding hands on the couch.
25. Bath time for Elton and Audrey.
26. Catching Ben smiling at me for no reason.
27. Finishing something I never thought I would.
28. Making someone feel better with words.
29. When the car is on empty but you know you will make it home.
30. Coming home and knowing this is where we are supposed to be.
31. When I am the only person awake and Ben, Elton, Audrey and the pets are all snoring.

alice in wonderland

Very excited to see Alice in Wonderland in 2010!

I have always loved this story and I can't wait to see what Tim Burton has done with it. I think he is such a clever man.

hello cupcake

wow!

I found these amazing cupcakes on flickr.

They come from a cupcake ninja called Naomi. She has a website called Hello Naomi and she is an Aussie from Newcastle.

They look too good to eat.

want to make a quilt?

I am going to start my next quilt and was wondering if you would like to make one with me?

Every Monday I will post about the steps for making a quilt and I will take lots of pictures as I go along.

If you are new to quilting or would like to learn how to make one, we could stumble our way along together.

Starting this coming Monday I will post about all the items you will need to start a lap size quilt.

You can either dash out and gather all your material and follow along, or you can do the quilt on your own time because my blog will always be here with the quilting posts.

I am in no way a quilting genius and if my technique is wrong, by all means please correct me because I am still learning too.

So next Monday it's a date. Meet here and the first post for Making A Quilt With Me will be up and it will also be a challenge for supporting Dani's The Power of Two project. Do you think you could find the material to make a lap quilt for $2?

anzacs

Yesterday I made some ANZAC biscuits for Ben. He loves them.

ANZAC biscuits have long been associated with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) since World War 1.

Women from Australia and New Zealand made the biscuits which were distributed to the soldiers.

The ingredients in the biscuit don't spoil very easily so they transported well to the soldiers.

Even today, many bush walkers or hikers pack ANZAC biscuits because of their tough constitution.....and they taste so good!

Here is the recipe if you would like to make your own.

Ingredients -
1 cup of rolled oats
1 cup of plain flour
3/4 cup of desiccated coconut
3/4 cup of castor sugar
1/2 teaspoon of bi-carb soda
2 tablespoons of boiling water
125g of melted butter
2 tablespoons of golden syrup

Method -
Preheat oven to 160oC
Combine oats, flour, coconut and sugar in a bowl
Dissolve soda in boiling water and add to melted butter and golden syrup
Pour onto dry ingredients and mix well
Place teaspoonfuls on baking paper lined trays
Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown

I purchased this recipe on a little card that hangs on my fridge from the Australian War Memorial and my biscuits always turn out well. It's a good recipe.

Jules the Masterchef

image via wide open spaces

My friend Jules is an awesome cook. She is.
Jules is always updating her facebook status with little notes like "Just finished browning the chicken breasts. Prawn appetisers are ready to go. Souffle in the oven" or "Trying Jamie's roasted veggies. Made some mini stuffed tomato's. Pan fried fish cooking. Whipping up sauce with my 3rd arm, whilst mixing margaritas and feeding little Sam."
When Jules has people over...she has "people over". Which means she is generally catering for over 10 people not including children. She is a whiz.
Jules is always inspiring me to try in harder in the kitchen and when I make something I always think "I wonder what Jules would say?" or "would Jules gag on this?"
My cooking consists of the slow cooker. Throwing things into it, turning it on and lifting the lid 7 hours later to see how it turned out. I can make a roast and my timing has improved. Roasts used to be served - peas for starters, meat for mains and roasted veggies for dessert. I can now get the roast on the plate all at the one time.
I think I am more a baker. I like watching the kids eyes light up when I give them a cookie I made, or Ben eating a piece of my cake. I can even make my own pies from scratch. I was so chuffed when I made the cinnamon scrolls!
So the moral of this story is - you know you have a good friend when they inspire you to do your best and give something a go. Even the things you are scared to try.
....and Jules is a domestic goddess who should start her own cooking blog. Yes she should.

quilting

I have been working on a new quilt. It has beautiful Autumn colours and I have 3 panels to go before I am finished.

Elton has been trying to claim this quilt. He checks the progress every morning and says "Done Helton's blankie?"

Ben said that by the time Elton and Audrey leave home they will have to have a truck just for the quilts I have made them. Audrey sleeps under 3 already and has to have them all in the cot.

I love them. I have them thrown all over the house - over chair arms and ladder rungs, hanging from the ends of beds. There is something so comforting about all that puckered goodness.

overnight stay

On Friday night we had an overnight stay at Crown Towers.
We stayed up on the 11th floor and looked at the beautiful view of the city.
Crown has amazing light fixtures and the hotel is very lush.
I love staying in hotels, but nothing beats staying at home.
The temperature is always just right, the bed is comfy, room service is 24hrs and anything you want to eat or drink and the price is very reasonable. The maid is always on call and offers a turn down service and our place has oodles of extras - scenic wildlife view, outdoor activities, valet service, laundry, and I hear the lady of the house will even wipe bottoms and noses.

image bookmarking....

ffffound

Wonderful Pip from Meet Me At Mikes and our Head Owl, wrote a great post "Pip's Guide to Useful Sites - Image Bookmarking and Gathering Inspiration....here.

Basically, when you are searching the net, catching up on your reading and you see fantastic images that you want to use, you save a copy on your hard drive.

This not only clogs up your hard drive but you forget the source of your picture, so when you put the image on your blog, you are not crediting the artist from which the picture came from.

Pip talked about Tumblr, We Heart It and Polyvore where you can open an account and post images to your account and it makes a note of your source. You can either post your account for people to look at our you can cut and copy your pictures to your blog to use at a later date.

I have a vi.sualize.us account called little suitcase

It is very easy to use. You enable a button on your links toolbar called - post to vi.sualize.us - and every time you see a picture you click on the button and it saves the picture into your account and the source is recorded.

Not only are you doing the right thing by the artist who's work you are using, it is fun to watch your collection of pictures grow to see what your style is, it saves room on your hard drive and when you are in need of some inspiration, you look at your collection of pictures and you feel inspired!

My little suitcase vi.sualize.us link is on the left hand side after my owl and this updates every time I find new pictures.

fozzie and hester

I have been working on some little drawings inspired by my children, and I named the two characters - fozzie and hester......although fozzie has a hair style like my benny.

I arranged a couple of the drawings into a comic book layout. (just click on the image to make it larger)

I have also turned some of the drawings into embroidery and you can see hester with her balloon.

I am thinking of turning fozzie and hester into postcards and making large comic style embroidery that can be hung in long rectangle frames for children's rooms.

Still thinking.........
ps - thank you for the beautiful comments on my blog. It makes my day so special to read them.

try, try, trying....

our front door - welcome!

I am not a very good photographer. I would love to be a good one, but it just isn't happening for me.

I have always taken my photos the exact same way - trying to cram it all in.

Lately (these past few weeks) I have been trying to stop, slow down, take my time taking pictures and try and photograph them in a different way.

I wandered around and took these pictures of our house. I will keep practising. All tips welcome!
